Survey of Students in Symphonic Band
Since teachers are regularly evaluated throughout the school year as a requirement, I thought it would be interesting and useful to try this out with the symphonic band students. I made a survey of 5 questions where students would answer anonymously whether they agree or disagree with the statements, which were reflections of my teaching. These were the results:
(SA= Strongly Agree; A= Agree; SWA= Somewhat Agree; D= Disagree; SD= Strongly Disagree)
“Your student conductor's attitude on the podium is positive, encouraging, and ambitious”
SA- 72.22%; A- 25%; SWA- 2.78%
“Your student conductor is effective in explaining musical concepts or how to improve in a certain technique or musical area.”
SA- 55.56%; A- 44.44%
“Your student conductor allows/encourages a positive classroom environment where you and other students feel comfortable.”
SA- 62.86%; A-34.29%; SWA- 2.86%
“Your student conductor is clear when giving examples or alternative explanations for concepts.”
SA- 42.86%; A- 48.57%; SWA-8.57%
“Your student conductor provides clear, simple, and applicable answers to questions that you or your classmates ask.”
SA- 54.29%; A- 40%; SWA- 5.71%
Reflecting on Results: It was really neat getting some feedback from the students, and to see how they think I’ve been doing with working with them. It made me really happy to know that the results were pretty much overwhelmingly positive. Most everything was on average evenly split between agree and disagree answers, which means I’ve pretty effective in teaching and rehearsing them in their opinion! I think the qualities to work on the most would be being clear when instructing them or explaining a strange concept. Statements pertaining to that seemed to get slightly lower ratings, and I will be continuing to work on that.
